Bolt Action Modern - Version 2.0 (Rules & Army Lists)

Although I was travelling all this week for work, I managed to finish writing up the Bolt Action version 2.0 rules (major updates/additions).  I also managed to consolidate all of the army lists into one document that uses two pages per army list.  The army lists also now include Russians and Australians (special thank you to Spyros Staikos for the Australians).

I know I've got more work to do on the British vehicles ... I've just got what I own in there now ... but there are many I could add ... but this should be more than enough to get people playing.

    1. lol .. thank you sir! I just uploaded an update to the army list to include Canadians ... also fixed a type above the medic entries (said Corpsman for non-USMC entries) ... the hazards of copy/paste. :-)

  3. Thank you very much! Do you have any plans to do some earlier army lists too? Like armies for the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

    2. Hello! Thanks for checking out the rules. Currently I have no plans for those listseeking, although most of the cold war Russian equipment is listed in the Iraqi army list. I'very never used the points system in Bolt Action (it really doesn'the work). I used my own judgement and specific scenarios to drive force composition.

    3. Thanks for the response! We're more confident with the army lists, but generally a platoon vs. platoon plus some support weapons are more or less balanced.

    Something's to playtest/consider for weirdo edge-case PLA players:

    Consider swapping the 'Life is Cheap' special rule for Regular morale for players that want to run scenarios with 15th Airborne or Marines.

    The PLA have close to a dozen special forces units, and a couple of them are trained primarily for counter-terrorism ops. Depending on what scenario the players are doing, you may want to let Special Forces teams use the Urban Operations special.

    Something I've already started painting is the Z-9. It's a licensed Dauphin clone and I'll be using one (or more) for insertion in CT scenarios. I wish I could find some Z-8s or -18s. :/

    I can only find them in 1:35, but as soon as someone makes them closer to 1:56 I'll be picking up a few ZBL-09s as APC/IFV/etc. Same stats as your ZBD05 that Empress makes today … only with wheels.

    Again, only in 1:35 (sigh) but in terms of tanks, Type 96 is still very much in use and is exported to other nations. I'd expect to see it in force projection scenarios in both Asia and Africa. Consider dropping morale for Life is Cheap flavor, using T-80 stats, and losing some of the 3rd gen bells and whistles.

    3. John - great suggestions for the Chinese. Yes, many Special Forces units ... although the defense community treats them with disdain in their capabilities. But, the optional Urban Operations rule makes sense. I'll look to add in the additional vehicles (going to add Germans and French lists as well).

  7. Quick question. How did you determine the armor and gun sizes for the tanks?

    1. Humm, multuple factors really. Vehicle statistics ... thickness of armour and type as it relates to standard penetration tests. Age of technology for the "current" theatre of operation. Group them into the categories as they relate to the armour classifications in the rules. It is a bit subjective as there are also additional factors like reactive, slat and other armour technologies in play.

    2. Oh, for gun sizes ... roughly anything in the 120mm to 125mm range is super heavy. 90mm to 105mm is heavy ... and so on ... again as it relates to the type of standard ammo being used for the weapon system.
