GameTime Episode 3: Muskets & Tomahawks

Hello all,

GameTime episode 3 is now available on YouTube at the links below (embedded as well).  This episode is all about Muskets & Tomahawks.  In part one I cover the game components, terrain, and miniatures I use in my French & Indian War collection when playing Muskets & Tomahawks.  In part two we walk through the rules and learn how to play M&T, and in part three Roy and John play through a full 400 point game.

You can watch the Episode 3 playlist here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrQUZE12Rqk&list=PLaYqyEfEe1DME4H9whj-rcyGW58Z2hR3g

Thanks for watching!

  2. I really enjoyed the AAR, the effects you put in were a nice touch. Have you guys tried any games with the "planning" rule for card activation?

    1. Hello Evan --- I hope your games at Game Kastle went well --- was swamped that day and couldn't make it over to check it out. I've not tried the planning rule yet ... we've been happy just flipping the cards ... but we should try it one of these games ... :-)

  3. Hi Jay, excellent videos! Perhaps one correction - on the example of the Grenadiers behind the stone wall receiving fire and failing a reaction test, they wouldn't have to Recoil move when behind heavy cover, but would instead receive a Shaken marker (I think).

    1. Hello --- thanks for watching! We did play that correctly, there is no morale benefit for the Grenadiers (other than elite) --- so a recoil was appropriate. Note that "skaken" is a Black Powder (ruleset) thing, not a M&T thing ;-) In M&T there are only four potential reaction results: ok, recoil, flight, or rout.

  4. Jay your production and editing skills just keep getting better and better.

The force is strong with this one!

And by "force" we mean OCD. ;-)

    Great work, my friend!

    1. Thanks --- I've managed to find a way to hack through it :-)

  5. Jay, Shaken is in M&T, and the rules for it are under the "Recoil" section on page 22: "A unit behind Heavy Cover does not need to recoil if the Reaction has been provoked by shooting. Instead, it can stay where it is but immediately becomes Shaken. A Shaken unit will lose the next Action of this turn. If an Activation card gives two Actions, the unit will only be able to perform one of these Actions, the other being expended to get rid of the Shaken status."

    1. Ahhh ... I play too many rule sets :-) You are indeed correct --- it is there, although when the Grenadiers recoiled it was from melee, not shooting, and they didn't have the wall, since they are charged against the French Regulars who were at the wall ... so in the end, it works out :-)

  6. Around 22.12 in the second video is when the error occurred concerning an explanation of a Recoil result from the French firing line shooting at the Grenadiers along the wall (the Grenadiers could have remained at the wall but would have been Shaken).

Also, in the second video describing the example of the Indians engaging in melee, mention is made that the Indians throwing tomahawks would deplete them of these weapons for the game. Perhaps you meant "for the turn", as the rule for One Shot Weapons says they may be used once per turn, and then again on successive turns (a successive turn being after the action deck is reshuffled) .

    1. Ahhh, part 2 --- I was only thinking of part 3 (editing takes a long time ... generally only remember the last video I've edited). Yes, in part two the grenadiers would not have recoiled. I didn't clarify all the rules in part 2 (in fact, I cut some of the explanation out, as it was just adding too much), it is mostly to prep those who don't have the rules and have never played before, so they can understand what is going on in part 3. If it gives someone enough of a taste that they want to buy the rules and read them in more detail I'll call that a win. If you already know how to play, skip to part 3 ;-)

    2. Oh, and thanks for keeping me honest :-)

  7. Jay, in all honesty, I wouldn't have remembered about the Shaken thing if I hadn't made up round markers to denote this (for placing next to the inflicted game unit similar to Flight markers, only showing "Shaken" on them, and noting the single action lost). ;-)

    1. There really needs to be a better quick reference sheet for stuff like that ... I started working on one ... good reason to finish it now. It's funny because I just got a bunch of counters in from Litko for Black Powder ... included in the sets was Shaken markers :-) lol

  9. Hello from Bligthy, curse those Garlic Munchers.
    I hate you, I do.
You have forced me in to this game system, I was trying to fend of this period but a friend likes it and like a fool I found your Blog and showed it him.

And NOW I have to buy some minis and paint them and a set of new rules to learn. I found your videos and terrain inspiring.

Where did you get the crop field (Top Right) From as I would like some of that terrain myself and the only negative (LOL) is your tractor turned ploughed field. ;)

Thank you for inspiring me and dragging me slightly less kicking and screaming into this period. I shall be watching your blog with interest.

    1. lol ... ok ... hate away! :-) Thanks for watching ... even if it has cost you money! Top right? There is a corn field top left ... wheat fields along the right side ... and the ploughed field ;-) The "corn fields" are from Battlefield Terrain Concepts (http://www.battlefieldterrain.com/product.btc?category_id=5&product_id=17) ... although I removed the stalks from the bases they use and rebased them myself. I'm actually going to get rid of those and use O-scale corn stalks from a railroad company. If you are not talking about the corn stalks let me know ...

  11. Great videos. These will help when introducing new players to this great rule set. By the way are you interested in participating in a world wide M&T FIW campaign. I ran the first campaign at Cold Wars with 8 players and someone asked if I would open up for others to participate. I posted the info on the studio tomahawk forum. Results of the cold wars tourney are on my blog here http://tomahawkcampaign.blogspot.com
