Epic Hail Caesar: Battle of Lake Trasimene

Managed to squeeze in a game of Epic Hail Caesar this last Sunday.  My goal is to play through each scenario in the rulebook (essentially all the major battles of the 2nd Punic War).

The first game was done at KublaCon Fall - the Battle of the Trebia.  The next battle up was the Battle of Lake Trasimene.

At Lake Trasimene, Gaius Flaminius led two Roman and two allied legions – numbering about 25,000 men in total. Hannibal probably had about 50,000 men, about half of them the veterans who had crossed the Alps with him, with the addition of heavy reinforcements from local Gaulish tribes. The only thing known for certain was that Hannibal’s army outnumbered Flaminius’s force.

You can download my scenario file for this battle here:

My Hail Caesar (2nd edition) rules reference can be downloaded here:

This was a close fought battle.  The Roman legions pushed hard towards the eastern table exit. A large melee ensued with the Libyan and Spanish infantry.  A bloody affair - and it came down to a single die roll on turn 6!  The Romans had a division - unbroken - ready to exit the table in their turn.  I had to get one more unit from the division to be Shaken to break the division.  My skirmishers managed to do just enough - by a single wound - to get that last Roman division to break.  Fun times!

KulbaCon Fall 2025: Epic Hail Caesar, Epic Pike & Shotte and More!

KublaCon Fall 2025 has wrapped up and our group had a great weekend full of miniature gaming.  This convention only just started last year and while on the smaller side the attendance grew significantly this year.  I look forward to seeing this event grow over the coming years.

Big picture dump below.  Four games are covered:

1. Epic Hail Caesar - The Battle of the Trebia
2. Epic Pike & Shotte - The Battle of Marston Moor
3. What A Cowboy - Shootout at Sundown On The Streets of El Paso
4. Dark Seas (WW2 Naval) - Second Battle of Cape Spartivento

Epic Hail Caesar
The Battle of the Trebia
Hosted By: Jay White

This was an unscheduled game that I decided to host only in the last few weeks.  It was our first game of Epic Hail Caesar and I have to say I really had a great time hosting and playing.  We played the Battle of the Trebia scenario from the rulebook on Friday.  I hosted a second game on Sunday afternoon as well (just a pitched battle).

I'm looking forward to playing more of this over the holidays.

Epic Pike & Shotte
Battle of Marston Moor
Hosted By: Jay White

The Battle of Marston Moor was the largest battle of the English Civil War (ECW).  The Parliamentarians and Scottish Covenant combined to face off against Prince Rupert leading the Royalist army.  I had a full compliment of players for the game and the Royalists managed to pull out the win.

This scenario represents the bulk of my Epic P&S collection.

What A Cowboy
Shootout at Sundown On The Streets of El Paso
Hosted By: Dan Kerrick

Dan has been busy preparing to host this game.  This was our first game of What A Cowboy and I must say we all had a great time playing in the game.  Dan did a great job hosting and guiding us through the rules.  I played on the side of the law and it was a close run game - but we lawmen pulled out the win!  I have to say, after playing Dead Man's Hand, Fistful of Lead, and now What A Cowboy - my preference by far is What A Cowboy.

Dark Seas WW2 Naval
Second Battle of Cape Spartivento
Hosted By: Roy Scaife

Roy ran a big naval game - British vs Italians.  I played one of the Italian squadrons.  We always have a great time playing in Roy's naval games.  My Italian squadron was sunk to a ship - total disaster but lots of laughs and a good time!  This was a British victory despite the losses on both sides - the Italian battleship did some serious damage!

I was busy playing (losing) - so I didn't get but a couple of pictures of this game unfortunately.

Well - that's it for now, happy gaming!
