Bolt Action Modern - v3.1 Update

Ok - got around to this sooner than expected.  I finally managed to get all the changes I wanted into this version.  This should hold us all down for some time barring any overlooked typos.  I'm starting into the army lists - which will need several updates based on this version.

You can download the rules from here.

Army lists available here.

Some key changes included now:

  • Fixed some typos.
  • Add Ultra-Heavy tanks and AT guns.
  • Increased PEN values for many weapons.
  • Expanded the Close Combat section (as it was in v2.0).
  • Added Chemical Attacks optional rules.
  • Added Supports rules (been wanting to do this for a while).
    • Includes supports for irregulars and regulars.
  • Revamped rules for Drones.
  • Revamped rules for Close Air Support (CAS).
  • Updates rules for Smoke Dischargers (moved from army lists into the vehicle special rules).
  • Added Back Blast Area weapons special rule.
  • Added Anti Aircraft Gun and Anti Aircraft Missile weapons special rules.

I think that covers it - plus the changes from v3.0 (changes to advanced armour, advance ammo, etc.).  Pictures of the sheets below.

  5. Quick question reguarding the army lists.. There are no points for units, so how would one go about working out a balanced list and what not?

  6. Hi, thanks for this update, putting up Russian unit myself. One thing, nothing about how to get mortars or artillery?

Really looking forward to get game against some yanks here. :)

    1. Ahh ... forgot to add the mortar team entry into the army lists. It is just like a medium mortar team for WW2 (3 crew) -- just using the Mortar entry in the weapons table. Fixed and team weapon.

    2. No problem there then. Haven't found any modern mortar teams for soviets without gas masks yet either.

    3. I would buy the Empress PLA type 89 motar team along with one of the Russian head packs ... or just a regular Russian infantry pa k from Empress ... chop the heads off the PLA and replace with Russian heads. After painting you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

    4. Thanks for the advice, will do that, I have extra heads already.

  7. I would definatley recommend expanding the army list sections.. to include points so people and make up "balanced" games..

I would also recommend putting "insurgents" as a seperate list. Or create one specifically for them.. i.e Taliban/African Milita/Cartels with their own specific rules and choices.. they are know to use old russian tanks and equipment.. some recently have been using WW2 stuff.

As for expanding units.. i would suggeat including additional vehicles.. a chinook and LYNX for brits would be nice for brits as one suggestion.. chinook being a large transport.. and a lynx somewhere beween that and an apache for example.. i would love to use those.

With these inplace i think you would definatley have a viable balanced game base with variety.. and even better for those players (like my self) who enjoy building lists and stuff..

Keep up the good work.. you have a new fan!

    1. Thanks Aaron for all the great suggestions. I don't use points myself and would have to invest a lot of time (and play testing) I don't have into making it work. That being said, I'm also a bit anti-points: http://jayswargamingmadness.blogspot.com/2017/03/a-few-words-on-building-scenarios.html

The existing army lists should serve as a template for adding new units ... if you have units you end up adding during the course of your gaming and want me to add them --- send me the stats and I'll pop them in the army lists. With the number of lists and units it is already fairly hard to maintain and work on adding new units that - at least at this point - I'll not be using myself.

      Thanks!

    2. Ahh thats understandable.. i will have a play and come up with a points system (or at least a formula) and if successful i can send to you?

And as for additional units whilst doing the points listings i will look up additional units and send them to you.. or at least a template to make your life easier..

      I am a HUGE fan of Bolt Action and the rules you have here have impressed me enough to begin to invest plenty of money in what will become another new hobby. which is always a plus! and have every intention of using your rules as a platform and any help i can give to make this greater.. i will do so.. {insert smilley faces}

  11. Came across this yesterday as I was thinking of making something similar. If I was to expand/change some things; more vehicles, a few new weapon/vehicle rules, maybe try to wrangle the unofficial points calculator etc. Would you want them sent to you to add to the document (if you like the alterations) or would citing this as the basis be sufficient?
